Join the Fall 2026 Author/Researcher Survey

Understand how rapidly evolving U.S. research policy is affecting your authors and researchers,
and inform what your organization can do in response.
Research Policy Is Changing. What Does Your Community Need?
Against a backdrop of ongoing changes in federal research funding, grantmaking, public access policy, and other federal requirements, researchers and publishers are facing a period of continued uncertainty. Changes such as the NIH public access policy are already
reshaping aspects of the research and publishing environment, while the
OMB/OSTP FY2027 research and development priorities – if enacted – have the potential to change how research is funded, published, disseminated, and evaluated.
These changes raise practical questions for organizations serving researchers. How are researchers responding? Are their publishing, collaboration, or conference decisions changing? What support do they need? What are their expectations in terms of guidance, advocacy, communication, and services? And what could these shifts mean economically for researchers and the organizations that support them?
Policy analysis can tell us what is changing. It cannot, by itself, tell us how researchers are experiencing those changes or how their behavior may shift. That requires hearing directly from the people doing the research.
Building on More Than 25,000 Researcher Responses
Delta Think launched its Author/Researcher Survey program in 2025 to understand how changes in U.S. research funding and policy were affecting researchers around the world. Across two survey waves, the research captured more than 25,000 responses across disciplines, career stages, and geographies.
The Fall 2026 Author/Researcher Survey will continue that longitudinal research while expanding the focus to the policy developments now shaping the next phase of the research environment. The objective is not simply to document what has changed. It is to understand what those changes mean for researcher behavior, expectations, and decision-making, and what organizations serving those researchers should do next.
Will You Participate?
Broad market intelligence is valuable. Understanding your own authors, researchers, and members within that market is far more actionable. This is what participants in the Delta Think Author/Researcher survey gain.
Delta Think manages the research process from end to end. We design the survey, field it to participating organizations’ communities, manage data collection, and conduct the analysis. Each participating organization receives its own cohort data and customized analysis, alongside findings from the broader respondent population.
That approach shows whether a community is experiencing the research environment differently from the market as a whole. It can reveal where concerns are greatest, where more support is needed, how expectations are evolving, and whether behaviors related to publishing, spending, conferences, or professional engagement are shifting.
Turning Researcher Insight Into Action
The findings can support decision-making across an organization, from publishing and editorial strategy to community engagement, advocacy, professional development, conferences, communications, and product or service planning.
An organization may discover that its researchers are more concerned than the broader market about publication costs, or that funding changes are affecting conference participation or publishing choices. It may find demand for clearer public access guidance, stronger advocacy, or new author support services.
The research can also help assess potential economic implications. If funding pressures change publishing volume, engagement, or demand for services, those shifts may affect revenue and planning. Understanding these signals early can help organizations evaluate risk and prioritize investments.
For organizations serving multiple disciplines, specialties, or geographies, cohort analysis can also expose differences that may be hidden in aggregate market data. And because the Fall 2026 survey builds on prior waves, participants gain not only a snapshot of current sentiment but a clearer view of how attitudes and behaviors are evolving over time.
Your Community. Broader Context. Better Decisions.
The research environment is changing quickly, and the implications will not be the same for every researcher community or organization. The Fall 2026 Author/Researcher Survey is designed to help scholarly and professional organizations move beyond assumptions and understand directly how their communities are responding.
Participating organizations receive their own cohort data and analysis, while the combined dataset provides a broader view of the research ecosystem. Detailed results are available to participants, and the full market report will also be available for purchase.
We are currently recruiting organizations to participate in the Fall 2026 survey, which is open to all, even if you have not participated in the past. If your organization wants better insight into how policy and funding changes are affecting your authors, researchers, or members, and what those changes may mean for your strategy, contact Delta Think to learn more about participation, cohort analysis, and research deliverables.
